2020 Winners
The 2020 photo contest theme was “Dreaming of Cuttyhunk”. Photos did not need to be taken on the island due to the 2020 COVID-19 Shelter-in-Place set for most the country during the time of the contest. They simply needed to be a photo of something that makes you think fondly of Cuttyhunk. The judging process included the artistic quality of the photo and the description provided. The sentiments regarding the island from many of the participants were moving and heart felt. Thank you to all that participated.
First Prize: Rebecca Garfield
Resourcefulness: turning beach finds into a swing; sibling bonding during COVID; unbeatable colors of sea and sky as May gives hints of summer on Buzzards Bay
Second PRize: Michael Luedke
When on Cuttyhunk, it is like time slows down and all of the day to day worries disappear. I find myself being more relaxed and able to enjoy life. During this global pandemic, I have tried to take the time to enjoy more of the little things in life. So, I took some time to enjoy watching the hummingbirds pollenate our flowers, something that probably would have only occurred on Cuttyhunk during other times. This photo reminds me to slow down and enjoy the little things, like Cuttyhunk always makes me do.
Third PRize (tie): Shelly Hunter
This reminds me of Cuttyhunk as we were walking the beach with our dog and I love patterns of nature and observing the beauty of nature. I saw the pattern on the sand and thought it looked like fish scales. Cuttyhunk reminds me of my childhood and being playful and childlike, especially at the beach. I thought it would be fun to draw a fish in the sand and see the scale pattern bring the fish to life. The pandemic has felt so isolating to stay safe and I was worried that this feeling of isolation would continue thru the summer and fall. Being at Cuttyhunk a week felt like a gift I gave to myself as I now feel more rejuvenated. It felt like an escape from the pandemic and an emotional boost from all the worries of the world. Dreams of Cuttyhunk did come true.
Third PRize (tie): John Joseph
This photo reminds me of Cuttyhunk because I spend the winter carving plugs and tying flies in my basement – dreaming of when I can get out to Cuttyhunk to use them.
18 Under Prize: Grayson Frothingham, age 12
When I think of Cuttyhunk animals, I immediately think of a bunny. In this image, I tried to capture the cuteness and iconic symbolism of a rabbit on Cuttyhunk.
